M A BUKHARI is known for his large calligraphic canvases, landscapes and semi-abstracts in broad strokes and vibrant colours. In this composition, Muhammad Ali Bukhari paints 99 names of Allah in impasto with palette knife and scalpel in oil colors. The artist studied at the Karachi School of Arts, and Albuman School of Arts in Italy and apprenticed and studied the work of master abstract expressionist painter Ismail Gulgee. Combining multiple influences, the artist has come up with something new, reinventing the traditional Islamic calligraphy with Italian glaze painting methods, an influence, clearly visible in his work. Bukhari's calligraphies are hugely sought after among contemporary calligraphy art collectors.
